Ferry Ride

Ferry ride to North Point.
Scallop lady hoping I'll buy.
Interesting sign in SOHO.
Another interesting sign in SOHO. I'm a big Pacman fan.

Hong Kong is by the ocean with many islands. Ferries are an essential part of transportation. One day I took the ferry with a friend on a lovely Saturday afternoon. We had a goal to hike up the Peak. So we took the ferry and then the subway and walked and walked. Ok so a hike in Hong Kong means you walk on concrete. haha There are no dirt paths in Hong Kong. The idea of hiking is more like walking. After we got off the ferry there is a fish market where you can buy all sorts of sea food that is still alive. This woman was sitting hoping I'd buy her scallops and shrimp.

Ocean Park

I'm a jellyfish!
We are baby jelly fish.

Giant ferris wheel.

My friend Alicia who I took to the Ocean Park!

So Ocean Park is one of my favourite places to hang out in Hong Kong. It is a mix between Sea World and Disneyland. I always feel like a big kid when I am there. In fact I like it so much that I bought myself a year pass, so I can go whenever I'd like. hehe There are fun rides like roller costers, swings, ferris wheels. Ther ferris wheel is a great place to see the sunset from. There is an amazing aquarium and a cool jelly fish exhibit.

A Collage of Languages

One of the amazing experiences of living overseas is all the languages. I went out to dinner at the Outback...yes there is one here in Hong Kong. I told you it was a civilized place. Anyway...hahaha...at this dinner the languages going around the table were German, Spanish with some different dialects in Spanish...Russian... Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Canadian hahah that's English. So it was quite the lively table. Hearing the languages actually helps you understand some words. Most of communication is not verbal, but unspoken. I picked up a few words in German and Russian that night. It was fun.

SOHO

I'm so grateful for a place like SOHO in the city. It's a great place to sit and drink your favourite concoction and enjoy good western food. Cicadas is one of my favourtie places. An Aussie friend introduced me to it. They have really yummy bellinnis. I think that's where I will have my birthday party next month. You are welcome to come of course. hahah Whoever you are! I'll just pull random people off the street and say come to my birthday.:) Sometimes life is like that. You are a stranger in a strange land and the strangeness around you makes you do strange things that you never would have done before. Maybe SOHO should stand for Strangers only have oaks. haha My randomness makes me think of my little autistic girl. She has come so far this year and is so much happier than the beginning of the year. Praise the Lord. But her randomness has rubbed off onto me, but then perhaps there is a little bit of Autism in us all.

ALONE-Rambling Free Verse

Alone...a word feared by so many. The world doesn't like the word alone. The world was made for more than one. This word that threatens life...why is it so terrible those words..."to be alone." For I see tears and years and fears. Dreams come and go. The word alone is still there. Maybe people think it represents lacking or missing. But does it? The word is al+one. I see it being full of life. Full of everything. All for one and one for all. Can this be my motto of solidarity?

Stinky Tofu

How many people in the world have experienced stinky tofu? Can you give me a shout? Well there is this street in Mong Kok that is surrounded by the aura of stinky tofu. What is stinky tofu? Well it is somekind of fermented tofu. It has a very pungent odor. Let me try to express it verbally...hot, wet, dirty feet smell...guys locker room....need I say more. Everytime I smell it I feel as though I could pass out and any hunger pains have been squelched by the smell that has invaded my nostrils.

Sweeping of the Tombs Festival

Today is a Tuesday and it is a religious holiday. It is a called Sweeping of the Tombs. The local Hong Kong people go to the tombs of their ancestors to sweep, clean the tombs and to offer incense and sacrifices. It is interesting to me that this holiday is around the time of Easter. Over 2,000 years ago several woman came to a tomb to offer sacrifices of spices on the body of Jesus and what did they find? The body was not there. What if the local Hong Kong people were to go and discover that the graves were open and their dead were not there. How terrifying that would be! Hong Kong has many more superstitions about the dead than mainland China. I'm sure it must have been there in mainland as well, but it is more hidden because of communism.

Well since I didn't have to work I visited one of the outer lying islands-Lamma Island. It is an island with no cars only foot traffic and bikes. There are lots of little hippee stores. I ate at the Bookworm Cafe, which is a vegetarian restaurant. It was so yummy to have Western style vegetarian food. Actually in a way I felt I was in Eugene, OR.:)
